Tip of the Month – April 2009
We are very excited to share with you some quick tips and ideas for this season and for fashion knowledge in general. Our first segment has been completed with Shaw CJBN-TV on Points North. We will be bringing you these tips once a month both in conjunction with Shaw and right here, with more detail, on our website blog.
Spring 2009! It’s Red hot! Look around you. Everyone is dying for this winter to finally be over, to get out of the house and get some fresh air and color back into our lives. Spring has to be the most celebrated event in Northern Ontario considering the winter that we’ve just endured. So why not start the celebration with a trip to the salon!
For Spring 2009, the most popular reds are warm and rich and work really well with medium to light brown hair. Colourist Louis Licari states, “Red hair has many personalities. It can be funny, sultry or even serious. Always remember: If you choose to be red, you choose to be noticed.” Red is a rare beauty, bestowed by nature on a mere two percent of mortals, it’s an instant exclamation mark!
It is common knowledge, or at least should be if you are a red hair virgin, that the condition of hair and the products that you use play a huge roll in the vibrancy and longevity of your new or revamped style. Give your hair a break and make a trip in to get a Redken Chemistry treatment. This service is personalized to restore moisture, protein, elasticity and shine and bring your hair back to the world of the living. It is on this canvas that your stylist can give you the most optimal results with your spring revival. It is also a good opportunity for you and your stylist to chat about new trends, what you love and what you hate about your look. You can discuss changes in style or maybe just a change in product to help you feel and look your best this spring.
Ever wished you could have those tosselled tresses like all of Hollywood? Now you can, and it’s easy. Let’s begin.
Things you will need:
- Flat iron- preferably one with a smaller plate (1-2 inches)
- If you have shorter hair, a mini-flat iron is best
- Thermal setting spray such as Redken’s Iron Silk, Fabricate or Hot Sets
- Flexible working hairspray such as Redken’s Workforce 09
- Clips
To begin, section out the nape area and clip the remaining hair up and out of the way.
You can spray this section with a thermal setting spray (Iron Silk is a Keric Funk favourite!) or spray each individual section before you curl it.
After applying Iron silk root to end, take your section (approx. 1 x 1 inch) and make a pass with the flat iron to “pre-heat” it. The hair will take a better shape if the heat is conducted through the section evenly. Going directly over the same section again, clamp your iron and rotate it 180 degrees. Gradually work the iron down the strand maintaining the tension and rotation. Leave to cool. Continue to drop sections and repeat this process until all of your hair is curled. Wait a few minutes for the hair to finish the cool down process and solidify its shape. Using your fingers, comb through all of your hair, loosening it until it is full, soft and natural looking. To finish, take a very light anti-humidity spray such as workforce 09 and lift and spray throughout the style for flexibility and memory.
Options for alternative looks:
Product:
The more you use; iron silk, fabricate, workforce, the more defined and curly your look will be. If you use less, the look becomes softer and has potential to “break down” sooner. For people with resistant or straight hair, use a generous amount of product to set and finish the hair. All the products above are light and designed to be layered so you can’t really over do it.
Tools:
Most flat irons now are selling with a 1-2 inch plate which makes flat ironing and curling your hair achievable with just one tool. (If the plate is larger than 2 inches, it is difficult to curl hair.)
If you use this technique with a curling iron, you can achieve similar results. Just make sure that you pre-heat the section from root to end as the root will take longer to heat up and take curl.
